En diciembre, Australia puso en marcha una nueva ley que prohíbe a los menores de 16 años usar las redes sociales. El gobierno quería proteger la salud mental de los jóvenes. Pero seis meses después, la ley no está funcionando bien.
Los estudios muestran que la mayoría de los chavales siguen pudiendo abrir y usar cuentas en Snapchat, Instagram y YouTube sin problemas. Las empresas tecnológicas no comprueban bien la edad de sus usuarios. Los niños pueden mentir sobre su edad o pedir a sus padres que les ayuden a pasar los controles faciales. Los programas informáticos especiales que intentan adivinar la edad de un usuario tampoco funcionan bien.
Ahora, el Gobierno está muy enfadado con las grandes empresas tecnológicas. Han duplicado las multas para las empresas que no cumplan las normas. Otros países del mundo están pendientes de Australia para ver si deberían aprobar leyes similares.
