Las autoridades han soltado unos 600 000 mosquitos machos en Washington D. C. para reducir el número de insectos. Esta idea suena rara, pero funciona bien.

Los mosquitos machos no pican a las personas ni beben sangre. Estos machos especiales son portadores de una bacteria llamada Wolbachia. Cuando se aparean con mosquitos hembras, los huevos no pueden eclosionar, así que no nacen nuevos mosquitos. El cambio climático está haciendo que las ciudades sean más cálidas, lo que ayuda a los mosquitos a vivir más tiempo y a transmitir enfermedades a los humanos. Los expertos dicen que este nuevo método es seguro para las personas, las aves y los peces. No daña la naturaleza ni a otros animales.

En unas pocas semanas, este proyecto puede reducir rápidamente la población de mosquitos y ayudar a la gente a disfrutar del aire libre en verano.
