La ONU votó a favor de cambiar el mapa mundial tradicional por uno nuevo llamado «Equal Earth». Este nuevo mapa muestra el tamaño real de África y de los países cercanos al ecuador.
El antiguo mapa de Mercator se creó para la navegación marítima, por lo que hace que los lugares cercanos a los polos, como Groenlandia, parezcan mucho más grandes de lo que son en realidad. La mayoría de los países apoyaron la resolución no vinculante, pero Estados Unidos votó en contra. Calificaron la idea de «política».
Los expertos dicen que ningún mapa plano es perfecto, pero el nuevo mapa ayuda a la gente a ver el tamaño real de los continentes. Este cambio ayudará a los colegios y a los gobiernos a entender mucho mejor los problemas mundiales.
