Lorenzo Suárez vive en un barrio pobre cerca de La Habana, en Cuba, pero en su casa tiene un precioso invernadero con 100 tipos diferentes de orquídeas.

Cuba se enfrenta a muchos problemas económicos, como cortes de luz y escasez de productos, pero Suárez se esfuerza mucho por cultivar estas flores tan coloridas. Es ingeniero agrónomo y le encanta crear nuevas variedades de plantas. En 2009, creó una famosa orquídea rosa, amarilla y blanca llamada «Bella Lorena». Ahora, cruza orquídeas cubanas locales con plantas de otros países. Su objetivo es crear nuevas flores resistentes que puedan sobrevivir a las temperaturas más cálidas de la isla.

Al crear nuevas y hermosas orquídeas en su propio país, espera evitar que la gente recoja orquídeas silvestres raras de los bosques, donde muchas orquídeas autóctonas están en peligro de extinción.
