Meta ha aceptado pagar una indemnización de 18.000 millones de dólares (16.500 millones de euros) para resolver las demandas presentadas por 48 estados de EE. UU., Washington D. C. y tres territorios.

Las demandas acusaban a Facebook e Instagram de perjudicar la salud mental de los niños a través de funciones adictivas.

Aunque Meta negó haber hecho nada malo, la empresa aceptó pagar esa cantidad en cuotas anuales durante 10 años para evitar multas que podrían haber sido aún más altas. Más allá del acuerdo económico, Meta introducirá importantes funciones de seguridad en línea para los usuarios adolescentes. Entre ellas se incluyen un límite de tiempo diario predeterminado de dos horas, bloqueos automáticos nocturnos entre medianoche y las 6:00 de la mañana, y restricciones durante el horario escolar. Además, Meta tiene previsto ocultar el recuento de «me gusta» y los filtros fotográficos que simulan la cirugía estética.

Sin embargo, Meta insiste en que el 30 % de los fondos solo se liberará si competidores como TikTok y YouTube adoptan restricciones de seguridad similares, lo que ha desatado un debate sobre la responsabilidad de todo el sector.
