Inglaterra pronto permitirá a los alcaldes locales cobrar un impuesto turístico por las pernoctaciones en hoteles.

El impuesto se aplicará a todo tipo de alojamientos, como hoteles, bed and breakfasts y casas de vacaciones. Los alcaldes podrán fijar el precio exacto, pero la mayoría tiene previsto mantenerlo por debajo del 5 % del importe total de la factura de la habitación.

Ciudades como Mánchester, que cobra 1 libra (1,14 euros) por habitación, y Edimburgo ya aplican tasas similares. Es probable que el nuevo impuesto entre en vigor antes de 2029. Muchas empresas del sector turístico no están contentas con el nuevo impuesto. Les preocupa que los visitantes elijan otros destinos para evitar pagar tasas adicionales, lo que podría suponer una pérdida de 1.8 mil millones de libras (2.1 mil millones de euros) en gasto turístico. Los estudios indican que muchos turistas podrían quedarse menos noches o gastar menos dinero.

Los alcaldes no están obligados a aplicar el impuesto, y algunos líderes locales ya han rechazado el plan.
