El presidente de Gambia, Adama Barrow, prometió solucionar los graves problemas eléctricos del país para finales de octubre de 2026. Esto ocurrió después de que la gente, enfadada, se manifestara en las calles.
Los manifestantes de la capital quemaron neumáticos y bloquearon el tráfico porque algunas zonas se quedaron sin luz durante dos días en medio de un calor sofocante. La policía utilizó gas lacrimógeno para dispersar a la multitud cerca del edificio de la compañía eléctrica. La gente está indignada porque los alimentos se echan a perder y los negocios no pueden funcionar sin electricidad.
El presidente Barrow calificó los cortes de luz como una grave emergencia. Dijo que el Gobierno terminará pronto de construir una nueva central eléctrica para ayudar a los hogares y a las empresas. Los responsables del sector energético dijeron que el calor y los problemas en el extranjero provocaron los cortes de electricidad. Estas protestas son importantes porque el país celebrará elecciones en diciembre y Barrow quiere volver a ganar.
