Una gran inundación en el Gran Cañón – nivel 3

Una gran riada repentina azotó el Gran Cañón, en Arizona. Se han registrado al menos dos muertos, varios desaparecidos y decenas de personas que tuvieron que ser evacuadas en helicóptero.

La grave inundación se produjo en el cañón Bright Angel, donde el arroyo Bright Angel se convirtió en un torrente peligroso. Según los expertos, las crecidas repentinas son habituales durante la temporada del monzón del suroeste, pero las víctimas mortales son poco frecuentes. La intensidad de esta riada en concreto se vio muy agravada por un reciente incendio forestal, que destruyó la vegetación y dejó el suelo desnudo, incapaz de absorber la lluvia. Como resultado, enormes cantidades de barro, rocas y escombros se precipitaron hacia el cañón y destruyeron la tubería Trans Canyon, que abastece de agua potable al South Rim.

Los expertos insisten en que los excursionistas que se encuentren en zonas remotas deben consultar las previsiones meteorológicas y dirigirse inmediatamente a terrenos elevados cuando las tormentas fuertes amenacen la región.
