Islandia tiene un clima frío y muy pocas tierras de cultivo, pero cuenta con mucha energía limpia, agua caliente y calor natural. Por eso, hay innovadores muy ingeniosos que están encontrando nuevas formas de cultivar alimentos en interiores.

Por ejemplo, un antiguo trabajador del sector tecnológico abrió una granja subterránea donde crecen con éxito miles de fresas japonesas dulces.

Otras startups están aprovechando el calor residual de los centros de datos informáticos dentro de contenedores de transporte para cultivar verduras frescas, lo que ayuda a Islandia a importar menos alimentos del extranjero. Cerca de las centrales geotérmicas, algunas empresas también cultivan microalgas en enormes tanques. Usan el aire frío natural de Islandia para mantener los tanques frescos y energía geotérmica limpia para hacer funcionar las instalaciones. Después, estas algas se secan y se usan para elaborar suplementos dietéticos saludables.

Todos estos ejemplos muestran cómo Islandia convierte su clima extremo en una gran ventaja.
