El basmati es un arroz famoso y caro. Se cultiva en una zona situada entre la India y Pakistán. Esa zona se llama Punjab.

Ambos países quieren que el nombre «basmati» les pertenezca en exclusiva en la UE. Un nombre especial supone mucho dinero y protección. La India solicitó primero el nombre a la UE, y Pakistán lo hizo después. Pero los dos países no se hablan entre sí para resolver el problema. Como todavía no hay ninguna norma al respecto, muchas empresas venden arroz «Basmati» falso por todo el mundo. Casi el 90 % del arroz «Basmati» que hay en las tiendas no viene del Punjab.

Si Europa no se decide pronto, puede que el nombre especial «basmati» ya no tenga importancia.
