El basmati es un tipo de arroz muy caro procedente de la región del Punjab, pero esta región está dividida entre la India y Pakistán.
Ambos países quieren proteger el nombre «basmati» en la UE para ganar más dinero. Si un nombre recibe protección, otros países no pueden usarlo. La India solicitó a la UE una protección especial en 2018, y Pakistán lo hizo en 2023. Pero los dos países no se hablan, así que no pueden tomar una decisión conjunta.
Otros lugares, como Chipre con el queso Halloumi, han colaborado con la UE para proteger su producto. Pero como la India y Pakistán no se hablan, casi el 90 % del arroz Basmati que se vende en todo el mundo no es auténtico. Si la UE no actúa pronto, la denominación «Basmati» podría perder por completo su valor especial.
